Meet the monkeys at London Zoo

Where: ZSL London Zoo, Regents Park
How much: Entry to the Zoo varies from £30 to £17.50

London Zoo’s ‘Meet the Monkey’s’ is a real treat for primate lovers.

A segregated part of the zoo, near the back, sees a small section just for these tiny Bolivian squirrel monkeys.

The monkeys are not in cages. Thick ropes hang from the trees and the open space allows the golden and black primates to roam around as they please, letting them do whatever they like.

These monkeys are usually found in South American regions such as Bolivia, Brazil and Peru and the enclosure at the Zoo is supposed to mimic their natural habitats.

There are 22, as the zookeepers say, but it’s hard to spot them on a bright and sunny day. If the monkeys are hungry, they will find nuts and fruit in the trees but when they’re being playful, they’ll run above your head on the ropes. When the sun hits one spot, the monkeys gather there, to catch some sunlight before it disappears.

The monkeys are completely harmless but the zookeepers warn guests that the little primates may do anything they want. They might pinch cameras or phones or even land on your head, but they probably won’t. You just have to be aware of your surroundings; a monkey could run past you and you wouldn’t even know it.
