Free: Learning something new at Gresham College’s lectures

Where: Gresham College, Holborn
How much: Free

Gresham College in the heart of Holborn, has been around for over 400 years.

They provides free public lectures that are led by some of the top professors and lecturers in that field. These lectures are on a variety of different topics such as art, politics and maths.

I was able to go to a 6pm lecture on 17th March 2014 about the impact that numbers have on our lives.

Seating was a first come first serve basis and many people were there early. The lecture took place in Barnard’s Inn Hall, a part of Gresham College since 1991.

The lecture, ‘Might as well toss a coin: How random numbers help us find exact solutions’ was led by Professor Tony Mann, a mathematics and computing lecturer at the University of Greenwich.

It was a good chance to learn something new about a topic that I didn’t know much about. The whole lecture lasted an hour which went quickly as it very engaging and there was some audience participation and an opportunity for a Q&A at the end. I was able to walk away wondering about many things, like how Pi can be applied to everyday life.

Gresham College’s upcoming free lectures are worth checking out, for a chance to learn something new.
