Where: The Curve, Barbican Centre
When: 13 February 2014 – 1 June 2014
How much: Free

This new exhibit at the Barbican Centre shows us what it’s like to experience a large dark space, playing with the concept of light, sound and movement.

You’re invited to use your heightened senses; sound is key when the lights are off. Entirely in the dark, Momentum allows visitors to walk around the exhibit space, blinded. You are warned beforehand that you may bump into people, which won’t happen if you come early.

Hanging from the ceiling are several light pendulums, which are carefully choreographed and synchronised as they slowly move around. Each pendulum emits its own sound and moving spotlights flicker on and off during the sequence.

The exhibit isn’t very big; it’s shaped to fill Barbican’s The Curve exhibition space. But its not brilliant. After a while you wonder why you’ve voluntary chosen to walk around in the dark. However, it is a free exhibit so it’s worth it to check it out.
